Approximately 41 students from high schools within the Rend Lake College District recently competed in a welding contest for a chance to win one of five one-year tuition waivers.
The contestants welded small I-beams and their work was judged by RLC Welding Professor Dave Smith.
The top ten finishers in the Friday, March 26, event were:
1 -- Clayton Fowler (Mt. Vernon Township High School)
2 -- David Black (MVTHS)
3 -- Eric Harris (MVTHS)
4 -- Kyle Kiefer (MVTHS)
5 -- Zach Zimmerman (Hamilton County Senior High School)
6 -- Mark Burwell (MVTHS)
7 -- Adam Magsig (HCSHS)
8 -- Kyle E. Duncan (MVTHS)
9 -- Jarred Metje (MVTHS)
10 -- Nathan DeSett (Benton Consolidated High School)
The top five finishers were offered one-year tuition waivers to Rend Lake College.
According to Smith, there is a great demand for skilled welders in the workplace. Those willing to put in the time and effort needed to not only improve their welding abilities, but also to develop their academic skills, can make terrific salaries, he said.
The demand for welders is so high, Smith said, that students often are hired right from the RLC welding lab.
