Warm weather is on the way and people will soon be heading for the beach. Help prepare for the swimming season with Lifeguard Training, offered by the Rend Lake College Aquatics Center.
The class is open to anyone who is or will be 15 years of age on or before April 18. Those interested can register by signing up for PYED 1137 at the RLC Office of Admissions. A maximum of 20 students will be allowed to sign up.
The class begins Friday, March 19, with a pre-test from 5-6:30 p.m. Students must be able to swim 500 continuous yards in a specific order: 200 yards of front crawl using rhythmic breathing and a stabilizing, propellant kick; 100 yards of breaststroke; and 200 yards of either front crawl or breaststroke (this portion may be a combination of the two).
Students also must be able to swim 20 yards using front crawl or breaststroke, as well as dive to a depth of 7 to 10 feet, retrieve a 10-pound object, return to the surface and swim 20 yards back to the starting point with both hands on the object.
The class will be held over several sessions: Friday, March 19, 5-6:30 p.m.; Saturday, March 20, 8 a.m.-noon; Sunday, March 21, 4-8 p.m.; Saturday, March 27, 8 a.m.-noon; Sunday, March 28, 4-8 p.m.; Friday, April 16, 5-9 p.m.; Saturday, April 17, 8 a.m.-noon; and Sunday, April 18, 4-8 p.m.
Students must bring their texts to each class, must attend and participate in all sessions; must demonstrate competency in each critical skill taught, and must correctly answer 80 percent of the questions in each section of the final written examination.
Tuition is $101 plus $36.13 for the American Red Cross Lifeguard Training manual, which can be purchased at the RLC book store.
