Each year, A Taste of Rend Lake features the talents of Rend Lake College’s Culinary Arts students. This year, the list includes several students who have worked diligently to improve their abilities and have been recognized for their efforts.
David Carter (Fairfield) and Nick Dellinger (Murphysboro) recently completed the written portion of the regional qualifier for the Skills USA competition. Skills USA is a national organization serving more than 264,000 high school and college students and professional members enrolled in training programs in technical, skilled, and service occupations, including health occupations.
In April, the pair will travel to Springfield for the hands-on culinary arts competition at the state level. In last year’s state competition, Carter took second place in the general culinary arts category.
After Rend Lake College, Carter said he would like to move to the east coast and work in a country club to get his culinary arts career started.
Also participating in this year’s Taste of Rend Lake is Pat Bunk (Scheller), who will travel to the 17th annual Salute to Excellence Awards Gala and Banquet, sponsored by the National Restaurant Association, on May 22 in Chicago. In the days following the banquet, Bunk will attend numerous seminars and will have the chance to speak with representatives of several major food companies.
Candidates for awards at Salute to Excellence are judged on several factors, including work ethic, grade-point average and others. Bunk will be joined on the trip by fellow culinary arts student Kenneth "K.P." Perry (Benton).
Bunk is retraining from a previous job and said she is looking for a daytime position with good working conditions. Perry hopes to eventually open his own restaurant.
A Taste of Rend Lake will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday, April 1, at the Rend Lake Resort Conference Center. It will feature a buffet-style line of appetizers, hot hors d’oeuvres and desserts. The event serves as a prelude to the Students for Students Art Auction, which gets underway with an auction preview at 5 p.m. followed by the main auction at 6 p.m.
