For Rend Lake College student Miles James, eyes are the windows to the soul. In fact, he specializes in them.
James (Marion) is one of many contributors to this year’s Students for Students Art Auction, which will be held Thursday, April 1, at the Rend Lake Resort Conference Center. There will be a preview at 5 p.m. and the auction starts at 6 p.m.
James said he tries to make portraits his specialty and may donate some of them to the auction. In James’ opinion, the most interesting part of a person is the eyes.
"You can tell a lot about a person from the eyes. I don’t know why, it’s just really cool," said James.
James said there are endless options when creating eyes in a drawing. When looking for subject matter, he said he often finds pictures of people in which the eyes can not clearly be seen. This allows him to create his own eyes.
James said he enjoys hand rendering and often uses a computer to manipulate what he has drawn. "Sometimes it turns out pretty neat," he said.
James said he discovered art early in life, during fourth grade. The graphics design major said he plans to attend Savannah School of Art Design after Rend Lake College and hopes eventually to work for Disney.
"I'll draw pretty much anything," James said. He added that he leans toward a realistic style rather than an abstract one.
In his first Students for Students Art Auction, James plans to submit some computer-manipulated images, colored pencil and chalk pastel renderings and possibly a portrait or two.
For the first time, two students events -- the Students for Students Art Auction and A Taste of Rend Lake -- will be held simultaneously. Tickets for the combined event are $10 and are available now.
"That’s a real bargain," said Pat Mitchell, Chief Executive Officer of the Rend Lake College Foundation. "Plus, we’re going to have some surprises."
A Taste of Rend Lake begins at 4 p.m. April 1 and features a buffet-style line of appetizers, hot hors d’oeuvres and desserts.
