Area businesses can turn to Rend Lake College to help pave the way to success by boosting their employees’ abilities and productivity
Laura Kern, Work Keys Coordinator in the Center for Business Services at RLC, has become an authorized Work Keys job profiler. The Center for Business Services serves the needs of both small and large employers within the college district by providing training programs, workshops, seminars and other services, including workplace skills assessments.
This is where Kern comes in. The Work Keys system tells workers and employers the skill levels needed for them to perform at full potential.
For businesses, the results of the Work Keys system are better hiring decisions, more fulfilled and qualified employees, an improved bottom line and reduced turnover, training costs and overtime. For employees, the result is career success.
Work Keys consists of three facets: job profiling, which identifies key skills and skill levels required for specific jobs; skills assessments, which pinpoint current skill levels in up to eight areas, including applied mathematics, applied technology, listening, locating information, observation, reading for information, teamwork and writing; and Targets for Instruction, which guides training.
"Work Keys allows businesses to pinpoint the skills of current and future employees compared to the requirements of specific jobs. This allows them to hire the right people and to target training programs for current staff," Kern said. "Those wanting to change jobs can improve the skills they have or learn what courses might take them where they want to go. This community now has a premier tool to produce a top-notch work force."
