MT. VERNON – Rend Lake College’s Community Education Department is bringing an exciting slate of classes to Mt. Vernon this fall, ranging from autumn decorations to preparing for the ACT to scrapbooking techniques, spa sensations, and much more.
High school juniors and seniors can prepare to ace the ACT with a course through RLC Community Ed. “ACT Prep” will be held from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturdays, Sept. 15 - Oct. 20 in room 344 of the RLC MarketPlace. This class is designed to teach the reading, English, science and math skills students need to do well on the ACT. Test-taking skills will be emphasized. Students must purchase Barron’s ACT 2007 textbook, which will be available for purchase at the first session for $20.27. Limited enrollment is available and preregistration is required. Cost is $79 plus text. Instructors are Cindy Birkner and Bonnie Payne.
“Decorating for Fall” will be a fun-filled evening of decorating hints for the home. Master decorating styles to give the home the look of yester-year. Discover the use of colors to totally change the look and feel of a room. Explore tablescapes to give a shelf or fireplace mental a unique look that is sure to impress guests. Lean to make a wreath that will stand out and make your front door look its best. Have trouble making a beautiful bow? Participants will make a bow to use in fall decorating for a $4 supply fee. This course will be held from 6:30 - 8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 13, at The Olde Homestead in Mt. Vernon. Cost is $12 plus supply fee. Instructor is Kathy Lemay.
Get started on a “Landscape Design.” Find out how to spruce up landscaping or start from scratch. Participants will learn landscaping principles, plant selection, hardscaping, problem solving and sketching. They will also discover the best ways to convey their wants and desires to professional landscapers. This course will take place from 6 - 8 p.m. over three Tuesdays, Sept. 18 - Oct. 2, at RLC MarketPlace Room 336. Cost is $24. Instructor is Sarah Lee.
Learn the basics of creative scrapbooking using decorative papers, card stock, rubber stamps, ribbons and embellishments in “Scrapbooking Techniques.” This course will teach how to display favorite photos and events in a creative way. Complete two pages while learning techniques that one can use over and over again. Techniques learned may also be applied to creative card making. All materials are provided for a $15 supply fee. This course takes place from 6 - 8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 4, at Cedarhurst Art Center. Cost is $12 plus supply fee. Instructor is Brandi White.
“Thimbleberries Mr. Snow Stocking” is a cute stocking pattern and great way to use up fabric scraps. It is an easy piecing and fused appliques. A finished stocking will be approximately 12 inches by 20 inches long. Students should bring their supplies and a sewing machine. This course will take place from 5:30 - 8 p.m. over three Thursdays, Oct. 11-25, at RLC MarketPlace Room 354A. Cost is $30 plus a supply fee. Instructor is Debbie Timmons.
Like to know how to set up and run an eBay store, but not sure where to start? “Create Your Own eBay Store” will help to determine which level of store pricing is right and the services given at each level. Students will learn how to design a home page and sale ads, as well as discover marketing tools at a user’s fingertips. This class will be held from 6 - 9 p.m. over three Thursdays, Oct. 25 - Nov. 11, at RLC MarketPlace Room 338. Cost is $36. Instructor is Cathy Graham.
“Spa Sensations” will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 8, at the Schweinfurth Home. For only $15 plus a supply fee, Ruth Daugherty will provide all the materials for a hands-on workshop ending in relaxation. Participants will create their very own “foot fizzy” and sugar scrub – the essentials for a foot spa. Once the products are finished, it’s time to sit back, relax and enjoy the creations. Bring a towel, basin or pan to pamper your feet.
Register for all six sessions of Holiday Samplers for just $20 or take particular sessions for $4 each. From tree ornaments to eat to home decor, this sampler is being held from 9 a.m. - 3:50 p.m., Nov. 10, at the RLC MarketPlace and is sure to please!
The first Holiday Sampler is “Edible Tree Ornaments” from 9-9:50 a.m. at the MarketPlace Coffee Shop. Discover edible tree ornaments so simple and eye-catching for a Christmas tree. Placed on the lowest branches, these ornaments will have a way of conveniently disappearing, saving cleanup time, when the holidays are over. Coffee drinks and scrumptious, baked goods will be sampled during the lecture demonstration. Instructor is Dawn Gibson. There is a $5 supply fee.
Next up is “Gift Wrap: Chic and Affordable” from 10 - 10:50 a.m., in MarketPlace Room 354A. Escape the ordinary this upcoming holiday season by adding a personal touch to each gift. Build anticipation with beautiful presents, in all shapes and sixes, under the Christmas tree. Instructor is Vicki Golliher. There is a $5 supply fee.
The third sample is “Holiday Hair and Make Up” from 11 - 11:50 a.m., in MarketPlace Room 354B. The Paul Mitchell Design Team at Studio RLC will share the latest trends and fashions for the 2007 holiday season. Participants will discover quick tips and techniques for hair and make up.
“Appetizers, Snacks and Sweets” is next from 1-1:50 p.m., in MarketPlace Room 354A. Sample quite a spread as instructor Jeanie Mitchell-Collins pulls out all the stops and creates some delicious holiday treats that are quick and amazing. Make this season’s entertaining painless with new ideas to satisfy party guests. There is supply fee of $5.
After filling up on snacks and sweets, head over to MarketPlace Room 345B for “Home Decor: Stylish and Stunning” from 2 - 2:50 p.m. Discover how to create unique home decor accents for pennies this holiday season. Instructor Kathy Lemay will demonstrate design techniques for holiday floral containers that will send participants home eager to transform another ho-hum holiday into a dazzling delight. Before this session ends, participants will make a floral bow – the perfect new accent for a tired wreath. There is a supply fee of $5.
Finally, “Holiday Greeting Cards” will wrap things up from 3 - 3:50 p.m., in MarketPlace Room 336. This quick and easy greeting card project with instructor Phyllis Garner is sure to please that someone special on the shopping list. Participants will create a handmade holiday card, perfect for holding a gift certificate, phone card, check or cash. There will be a supply fee of $5.
Just in time for the holidays, “Holiday Gift Bags for Stampers and Scrappers” will arrive in Mt. Vernon. Whether one is a beginner or advanced in stamping skills, he or she will complete a holiday gift bag, matching gift tag and greeting card in this one session class. This class will take place from 6 - 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 27, at the Cedarhurst Art Center. A supply fee of $5 is required.
“Cooking for Santa” will top off the fall courses in Mt. Vernon. Create holiday treats to share with family and friends – and don’t forget to save some for Santa! The jolly old elf will make a special visit to sample the creations in the class. Each child will take home a variety of sweets, include the recipes. Participants must be 6 years of age or older. The course will be held from 1- 3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 8, in MarketPlace Room 354A. A $5 supply fee is required.
