The Rend Lake College Coffee Shop is more than just a place to relax and enjoy a cup of joe. Everyone is invited to come and see what this new facility has to offer during an open house Friday, February 27.
The event will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the RLC Coffee Shop, located at the Rend Lake College MarketPlace on Potomac Boulevard in Mt. Vernon. There will be pizza compliments of Bobo’s, appetizers provided by Lone Star Steakhouse and Saloon and coffee and desserts from the RLC Coffee Shop.
According to Coffee Shop Manager Cindy Hoard, attendees will have the chance to take tours of the MarketPlace. The MarketPlace features a diverse array of establishments, including Studio RLC, the salon associated with Rend Lake College’s Paul Mitchell Partner School Cosmetology program. The facility also features the RLC Golf Outlet, various retail stores, state offices and college classrooms, which also house RLC’s Massage Therapy program.
The RLC Coffee Shop now boasts free wireless Internet access as well as a big-screen television, comfortable furniture and a wide selection of magazines.
New to the store is a book exchange program, which Hoard said has become quite popular. "The shelves are filling up, but we’re still taking more books," she said.
No money changes hands in this effort for readers to share books of all kinds, including fiction, nonfiction, children’s books, popular titles, textbooks, hardbacks and paperbacks. Anyone wishing to donate books to the exchange is encouraged to do so during the Coffee Shop’s regular business hours or at the Marketing and Public Information Office in the RLC Student Center.
Area book clubs also are encouraged to contact Hoard about the possibility of using the RLC Coffee Shop as a meeting place.
On the culinary side of things, the coffee shop continues to expand its offerings. Now available is a quality selection of flavored teas from The Republic of Tea, a company located in Nashville, Ill. Hoard said the coffee shop will soon begin offering bottled teas from the company as well.
Of course, the RLC Coffee Shop is a great place to stop for an espresso, cappuccino, or latte. Other offerings include a wide selection of fine chocolates, as well as soft drinks, shakes, hand-dipped ice cream, bagels, muffins, biscotti, pretzels, cheesecake and cookies. Hoard said the store soon will begin carrying breakfast foods.
Hours at the RLC Coffee Shop are 7:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday. For more information, contact Hoard at 242-4338 or toll-free (in-district) at 1-800-369-5321.
