Area sponsors will be participating in the Big Read by holding events at their facilities through November. There are some great events coming up for the public to attend in the first half of October. All events are completely free to attend.
Rend Lake College has chosen to celebrate “The Joy Luck Club” - a great American novel by writer Amy Tan. The novel will be available at no cost during some Big Read events coming up in the area.
A discussion of the book at Cedarhurst Center for the Arts will take place at noon Wednesday, Oct. 3, in Mt. Vernon.
A book discussion will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 4, at GreenTree Assisted Living Center in Mt. Vernon.
Marshall holds a B.A. in workforce education and development and a M.A. in speech communication. He has worked with the adult education population as a literary recruiter, ABE/GED instructor, workplace literacy instructor, WIA youth employability trainer, student service coordinator for adult education and family literacy, and trainer.
The Big Read is an initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with the Institute of Museum and Library Services. It’s mission is to restore reading to the center of American culture. Pick up a copy of Tan’s “The Joy Luck Club” and attend one or many of the Big Read events being held in this area.
