MT. VERNON – Students of the Culinary Arts Club at Rend Lake College will soon be at the Mt. Vernon Super Wal-Mart serving up some great deals for a good cause.
Club members will be outside Wal-Mart from 7 to 7 on Saturday, Nov. 17 selling baked goods, gift jars, goodies and more to raise funds for many important projects and community service activities the Club is involved with every year.
Mason jars filled with all the ingredients for popular holiday items like soup, cookies, cocoa and more will be available for only $7 each. The jars come ready to gift, complete with holiday packaging and a gift tag.
Assorted baked goods will also be for sale, in addition to Culinary Arts Club merchandise and raffle tickets for a new shotgun. Pending approval from store officials, there may even be some Club and faculty members on-hand to grill brats, burgers and more to raise funds.
Goals of the Club include helping with the soup kitchen in January at the St. Mary’s Parrish Center in Mt. Vernon, providing meals to needy local families during the holiday season, preparing and serving food for the Knights of Columbus, and funding one to four students to participate next fall in a recently-created student exchange program with a school in Finland.
“We want to keep our name out there,” said Club President Susan McKinley. “We want to try to bring some more restaurants into Southern Illinois that need chefs. For those of us who do volunteer, it looks good on our resume. The Culinary Arts Club Board of Directors and I are really trying to keep our name out in the public and raise funds for worthy activities.”
In addition to the Wal-Mart effort, Club members are selling cotton candy for $2 a bag from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. each Thursday in the campus Student Center. They also sell assorted soups twice a month from the Culinary Arts lab at RLC. A quart of soup is only $4 from 3:30 – 4:30 p.m. on two Tuesdays each month. The Club has put together a raffle opportunity for a contestant to win a new shotgun on Dec. 7. Tickets are $5 each or five for $20. Call McKinley at 618-214-5398 for more information.
RLC students practice culinary arts and learn community service by participating in Culinary Arts Club activities.
