MT. VERNON – Quick Computer Workshops through the Rend Lake College Community Education Department are a great way to brush up on some skills or discover new abilities with technology.
RLC has nearly 20 workshops starting soon in Room 338 at the RLC MarketPlace in Mt. Vernon. Some workshops are presented in beginning, intermediate and advanced versions.
Computer Basics: Getting Started is from 9 a.m. - noon on Thursdays, Jan. 17 - 31. A second installment will take place from 9 a.m. - noon on Tuesdays, April 1- 15. This class designed for those with little or no computer experience, including individuals who have never used a computer before. The course covers the basics of the Windows XP operating system. Skills learned will include mouse techniques, moving and resizing windows, proper use of the taskbar, the Start menu and an introduction to the menus and icons used in the Windows file system (Windows Explorer).
Beginning Microsoft PowerPoint is from 8 a.m. - 4 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 23. Microsoft PowerPoint is a presentation program developed by Microsoft. It is part of the Microsoft Office system. Microsoft PowerPoint runs on Microsoft Windows and the Mac OS computer operating systems. It is widely used by business people, educators, students, and trainers.
Beginning QuickBooks will be held from 8 a.m. - noon on Tuesdays, Feb. 5 - 26. QuickBooks is a line of business accounting software developed and marketed by Intuit. Small businesses use QuickBooks for most financially-related business processes, from entering sales receipts, tracking expenses, preparing and sending invoices, sales tax tracking and payment, preparation of basic financial statements and reports, and inventory management. The program also includes MICR check printing and options for employee payroll and time tracking. For most tasks, QuickBooks doesn’t require users to understand standard accounting procedures. Most transactions are recorded using on-line screens that closely resemble paper based forms such as invoices or checks.
Beginning Computers/Windows is from 8 a.m. - 4 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 7. The term Windows collectively describes any or all of several generations of Microsoft operating system products.
Beginning Microsoft Excel is from 8 a.m. - 4 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 13. One of the most popular microcomputer applications to date, Microsoft Excel is a spreadsheet application that features calculation, graphing tools, pivot tables and a macro programming language. It is overwhelmingly the dominant spreadsheet application available for these platforms. Intermediate Microsoft Excel is from 8 a.m. - 4 p.m. Tuesday, March 18.Advanced Microsoft Excel is from 8 a.m. - 4 p.m. Thursday, April 17.
Computer Basics: Internet and Email will take place from 9 a.m. - noon on Thursdays, Feb. 14 - 28. A second installment will be held from 9 a.m. - noon on Tuesdays, April 22 - May 6. Learn the steps to be a skilled Web surfer and send priceless electronic mail to friends and family.
Beginning Microsoft Word is from 5:30 - 9:30 p.m. on Tuesday and Thursday, Feb. 19 and 21. Microsoft Word is Microsoft’s flagship word processing software. Learn to create, edit, format and save documents with this program. Intermediate Microsoft Word is from 8 a.m. - 4 p.m. Wednesday, March 19. Advanced Microsoft Word is from 8 a.m. - 4 p.m. Wednesday, April 9.
Beginning Microsoft Access is from 8 a.m. - 4 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 27. Make more informed decisions by effectively tracking, reporting, and sharing information with Microsoft Access. Intermediate Microsoft Access is from 5:30 - 9:30 p.m. on Tuesday and Thursday, April 22 and 24.
Beginning Photoshop will take place from 5:30 - 9:30 p.m. on Tuesday and Thursday, March 4 and 6. Photoshop is a professional image-editing and graphics creation software from Adobe. Learn to use Photoshop’s large library of effects, filters and layers to do amazing things with photos.
Beginning Microsoft Publisher is from 5:30 - 9:30 p.m. on Tuesday and Thursday, March 25 and 27. Learn to create, customize, and publish materials such as newsletters, brochures, flyers, catalogs, and Web sites with Microsoft Publisher.
Beginning Web Page Design is from 8 a.m. - 4 p.m. Thursday, April 3. This class shows students how to create a web page in simple steps. Intermediate Web Page Design is from 8 a.m. - 4 p.m. Thursday, April 24.
Every class listed above, except for Beginning QuickBooks, will earn the student a half-credit hour at RLC and costs $74.50. Beginning QuickBooks is worth a full credit hour and costs $109.
