MCLEANSBORO – Rend Lake College has lined up some exciting Community Education opportunities starting late February in McLeansboro.
Journey along a moving path of American history in “Armchair Tour: Trail of Tears”from 6 - 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 28, in room 166 of Hamilton County Senior High School A building. RLC armchair tours are a way in which individuals can embark on voyages without moving an inch. RLC history instructor Henry “Buster” Leeck and tour guide Marilyn Schild will lead viewers in a preview of the physical trip along the Trail of Tears on Aug. 3 -10 with the RLC Community Education department. Nearly 9,000 Cherokees passed through Southern Illinois between November, 1838 and January, 1839 on their fateful Trail of Tears as the government forced them to abandon their homes in the Great Smokies and go west to Oklahoma. As the nation reaches the 170th Anniversary of their voyage through Illinois, participants in Armchair Tour: Trail of Tears will hear how the Cherokees crossed the Ohio River into Illinois at Golconda and continued on their journey. The armchair tour costs only $9 to attend. Those interested in finding out more about the RLC Trail of Tears trip can attend the armchair tour.
Create a wall hanging or quilt to keep or gift in “Quilting” from 6-8 p.m. each Monday, March 10- April 21, in room B157 at Hamilton County Senior High School.There will be several projects to choose from that can be completed during this six-week course. Supplies will be approximately $20-$30 and a list will be provided at the first session. Bring scissors to class. Quilting costs $48 plus the supply fee.
Habla Espanol? Find out how in “Spanish for Travelers” from 6-8 p.m. each Tuesday, April 1 - 29. This five-session class is great for those with an upcoming destination south of the border. Spanish for Travelers will include instruction and tutoring in basic Spanish communication featuring characteristic traveling situations where individuals are likely to need some elementary Spanish skills. Students will be tutored in booking a hotel room, eating at a restaurant, talking about the weather, telling and asking where places are, handling money and telling time. This class is intended for people with little or no knowledge of Spanish.
