Rend Lake College’s art students will be displaying their abilities in the coming weeks during the second annual Rend Lake College Student Art Exhibition.
The display will be available for viewing November 14-December 5 in the RLC Learning Resource Center, Theatre and Art Studio. There will be an opening reception from 7-9 p.m. Friday, November 14, in the RLC Theatre with an awards presentation at 8 p.m.
"It’s always wonderful," said Associate Art Professor Therese Howard of the exhibition. "It’s such an eclectic group of art."
Howard said there will be several varieties of art on display, including drawing, painting, sculpture, jewelry, photography, ceramics, etc. The exhibits will consist of works the art students have created in class. Some works completed at home also will be allowed, as long as they were completed during the school year, she said.
Although this is being billed as the second annual exhibition, the event itself has been held for at least 20 years, Howard said. In past years, works by faculty members were included in the show. However, the format of the exhibition has changed because the faculty members now hold their own art show in the spring.
"This is completely student-oriented," said Howard. The students may submit up to 15 pieces for the exhibition. Any art student submitting five or more pieces receives his or her own exhibition space, she said. Thus comes the birth of a new awards category - Best Show of Portfolio. Awards also will be handed out in the various categories of art.
Howard estimated there are at least 30 exhibitors. She said the show usually draws between 150 and 250 spectators.
During Friday’s opening reception, spectators will be treated not only to the students’ art creations, but also to blues music and food, including Japanese meat balls, egg rolls, fortune and almond cookies, coffee, tea and other treats.
