Harland Scheibal knows it takes time to master the game of golf. For the past 23 years, he has been practicing while supporting the Rend Lake College Foundation at its annual tournament.
Scheibal said at Thursday’s 23rd annual RLC Foundation Open Golf Tournament, held at Rend Lake Golf Course, he was among the players in the inaugural tournament. The Collinsville resident teamed at the recent event with Larry Ackerman and Bill Harpole, both of Hillsboro, Don Miller of Freeburg, John Cavaletto of Salem and Mike Dingerson of Norfolk, VA.
Ackerman, Harpole and Scheibal have all been mainstays of the Foundation Open team since the beginning.
Scheibal said he played the inaugural event at the behest of friends at the college. He said he stayed in contact and continues to play ‘’to help benefit the Foundation.’’
Ackerman recalled winning a pair of golf shoes the first year.
‘’We won it one year,’’ Harpole said. He joked, ‘’I won it for everybody and they all walked out with a golf bag.’’ Playing on that team were Harpole, Ackerman, Mike Rippe and Don Faller.
Although not a member of the original team, Cavaletto said he enjoys coming out and hitting the links with his friends for the benefit of the Rend Lake College Foundation.
Proceeds from the annual tournament support RLCF programs, with an emphasis on student scholarships.
