Mt. Vernon-Rend Lake College announces the fall community education classes for the Mt. Vernon area.
Complete your own masterpiece to take home during the four sessions of "Painting One Stroke Quick & Easy." Experience the beautiful painting technique from a certified "one stroke" instructor. Learn basic techniques, combination strokes, insider tips and more. This class is for beginners, as well as expert decorative painters. Classes run on Tuesdays from 6-8 p.m. Sept. 9-Sept. 30 at the Cedarhurst Art Center. The course costs $32 to register and supplies are purchases separately with the instructor at the first class for $15.
Don't let the ACT Test intimidate you! Area high school juniors and seniors can learn how to do well on the ACT test with "ACT Prep." This course is designed to teach reading, English, science and math skills. Test-taking skills will be emphasized. Students must purchase Barron's ACT 2007 textbook. They will be available for purchase the first session for $20.27. This course costs $79 and takes place on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to noon from Sept. 13-Oct. 18 at the RLC MarketPlace Room 344.
Discover the art of the past as you observe "Making Lye Soap." This fascinating class will give you a new perspective on your Mother's or Grandmother's daily life. You will be provided with recipes, directions, and all ingredients to make and take home 2 lbs of lye soap. Milk and fragrances will be available. Bring a towel, small cooler, latex gloves and eye protection (regular glasses or safety glasses) and $8 supply fee and take some lye soap home at the end of the session. This class will be Tuesday, September 16 at Schweinfurth Home in Mt. Vernon from 6:30 p.m.-9:30 p.m. with instructor Susan Johnson. The cost is $15 plus supply fee.
Do you have a parent or loved one with medical issues struggling to remain in his or her own home? "Modifying the Home of a Loved One" is a class that discusses typical environmental problems that eventually drives the elderly out of their homes. Discover types of equipment available for the home, what is covered by insurance, and options to get non-covered items paid for through organizations. Different home modifications will be discussed that can be made by a relative or handy man to improve the living environment of that special person. The class will be held on Monday, Sept. 22 from 6-8 p.m. at the RLC MarketPlace Room 203. The cost is only $10.
Communication with the deaf through "Sign Language" is a rewarding skill for the hearing and also creates wider contacts for the deaf. Using instruction and group activities, you will learn basic American Sign Language, sign exact English, and acquire an understanding of the culture of the hearing impaired. This class is a great opportunity for teachers to learn the alphabet, colors, numbers and common items in the classroom. Teaching materials for deaf and hard of hearing will be shared. The textbook, The Joy of Signing, is optional. The course will be held Monday evenings from 6-8 p.m., Sept. 29-Oct. 27 at the RLC MarketPlace. It is worth 0.5 credit hours/7.5 CPDUs. The cost is $37.
Learn how to spruce up your landscape or start from scratch with Horticulture instructor, Sarah Lee. Get started on your landscape design by learning landscaping principles, plant selection, problem solving, and sketching. You'll also discover the best ways to convey your wants and desires to professional landscapers. Students need to bring an architect's scale, colored pencils/markers and a mechanical pencil. "Landscape Design"will be held on Wednesdays, Oct. 8-22 from 6-8 p.m. at the RLC MarketPlace in Room 354A. The cost of the course is $24.
Board the RLC bus for a scrappin' good time for the "Scrap-A-Long Bus Tour"! The afternoon journey will take participants on a scavenger hunt as they search for tools and treasures to complete a 2-page layout. The excitement continues with a stop at Sherry's Simply Scrappin' in Mt. Vernon for an evening of friendship and fun. Bring 10-15 photos for two, 2-page layouts with an autumn theme. Don't forget your scrapbooking essentials and items to work on as you crop the night away. Brown bag supper, snacks and drinks are required. The bus is scheduled to leave the Historic Schoolhouse on Saturday, October 11 at 1 p.m. and return at 11:30 p.m. The bus also picks up at the RLC MarketPlace at 1:30 p.m. and drops back off at 11:15 p.m. The cost is $35.
Did you know the fleas, ticks, and flies that your dog deals with outside can affect you and your family? Local veterinarian, Kevin Lamczyk will show you how to protect your animals and your family with proper treatment. He will also cover how to deal with parasites that have already infected your animal, what the treatments are and what happens if it is left untreated. "Family Pets and Parasites" will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 15 from 6-7:30 p.m. at the RLC MarketPlace in Room 203. The cost is only $5.
If you know the basics of knitting and want to bring your skills to the next level, this class is for you. Learn intermediate techniques such as slip stitching and cable knitting. You will work on a project of your choice such as a hat, socks, scarf or sweater during"Knitting Beyond the Basics." Material to bring the first night include smooth yarn in worsted weight (knits at 5 stitches/inch on US 7 or 8 needles), needles appropriate for yarn, scissors and a tape measure or ruler. The cost of the course is $32. Join instructor, Pat Martin on Tuesdays, Nov. 4-25 from 6-8 p.m. at the Cedarhurst Art Center.
Learn how to braid hair just in time for the holiday festivities! "Me and My Buddy Hair Braiding" will teach you different braiding techniques practicing with your child's hair. French braiding, fishbone, and corn rolls, as well as a variety of other techniques will be taught. This course is not exclusive to mothers-any family member or friend may attend. Join the braiding fun on Monday, November 17th from 5:30-6:30 p.m. at Studio RLC in the RLC MarketPlace. The registration fee is $10. $3 supply fee is payable to the instructor at the session.
Interested in buying and selling on eBay, but don't know where to begin? "eBay for Dummies" covers the basic skills on how to buy, sell and navigate eBay. You will learn about eBay's rules and regulations that promote a safe trading environment, how to create an account, how to get started buying and selling, and tips for making your experience a success. Students must have a functioning email address prior to the first session and be able to access it from the RLC computer lab. Join instructor Cathy Graham on Tuesdays, Nov. 18-25 from 6-9 p.m. at the RLC MarketPlace in Room 338. Cost for this course is $24.
It's a holiday road trip to historic New Harmony for their annual holiday celebration on Saturday, December 6. The bus will be departing from two locations. Board in Mt. Vernon at the RLC MarketPlace at 8 a.m. and return at 5:30 p.m. or board at Wayne City High School at 8:30 a.m. and return at 5 p.m. The morning and early afternoon are slotted for self-guided shopping and lunch. A parade, carolers, and craft fair will all be part of the celebration. In the afternoon, visit Atheneum Theater to watch a film and view exhibits about the early Harmonists, followed by a guided tour of New Harmony. Tour fees and transportation are included in the $40 registration fee for "New Harmony Holiday Celebration." Lunch is not included in the fee.
