INA – Christopher High School senior Matt Thomas recently won $2,200 in scholarship and equipment prizes through Rend Lake College’s 2009 Annual Welding Technology Contest, now in its 28th year in the Applied Science and Technology Division at the college.
Thomas was among 29 seniors and other junior observers from seven area schools who showcased their skills under welding shields in RLC’s state-of-the-art welding lab to try and win a scholarship to the program in the fall. The top three finishers – Thomas, and Mt. Vernon High’s Bryson Owens (2nd place) and Jake Sterner – were awarded scholarships, tee-shirts and gloves. Thomas’ grand prize included a brand new welding helmet donated by ILMO Welding Products Company. Sonny Hart of ILMO represented the company in presenting Thomas with his prize.
In addition to those previously mentioned, the top 10 included Brent Daniels (Mt. Vernon), Jordan Brown (McLeansboro), Dillon Guy (Wayne City), John Fuller (Wayne City), Dylan Fowler (Christopher), Andrew Seagraves (Mt. Vernon) and Taylor Tabing (Pinckneyville). These students also received high-quality welding gloves from ILMO.
“We appreciate everyone coming out today, especially the high school teachers who work with these students and took the time to bring them to our contest,” said RLC Welding Technology Professor Dave Smith. “You students might want to take some time to thank your teacher for their hard work.”
