McLEANSBORO, Ill. - Hamilton County Senior High School senior Matthias Campbell has been awarded a scholarship to Rend Lake College by the Christian Chapel Church of McLeansboro.
Campbell is the son of Gary and Denise Campbell. He was joined today at the high school by Richard Woods, a member of the Christian Chapel Church Board of Trustees, and RLC Foundation Chief Executive Officer Pat Kern.
Christian Chapel Church, pastored by Ruby McDowell, was established around 1998 in McLeansboro. It has offered the $2,500 scholarship to RLC annually since 2006. The scholarship is awarded each year to a graduating HCSHS senior who shows economic need. Past recipients include Lucas Jones (2006-07), Jonya Stephen (2007-08) and Jimmy Anderson (2008-09).
Woods said Christian Chapel Church members choose to support a RLC student each year because they feel obligated to help students better themselves, which fits their philosophy of Christians helping others. Members feel if the church helps students now, they will be more likely to give back to their community in the future, according to Woods.
Matthias plans to attend RLC’s Wireless Communications Technology program and transfer to Southern Illinois University at Carbondale. His activities include Fellowship of Christian Athletes, cross-country, band, jazz band and the Auto Club, 4H, Interact trash pickups, Road Block for Kids Christmas and volunteering for the Hamilton Memorial Hospital Foundation Banquet.
