Cheerleading, basketball, dancing and Halloween treats - Rend Lake College's Community Education Department has something for kids and adults in McLeansboro this fall.
"Cheerleading (Grades 5-6)" will be held from 3:15 to 4:30 p.m. on Mondays from Sept. 21 to Oct. 19 (no class on Monday, October 12) at the East Side Gym. Melissa Mullins will instruct students on the basic cheerleading motions, positions and jumps, as well as chants, group cheers and a team routine. Students in this class will be featured in a live performance during a sixth-grade ballgame, date to be announced. Course cost is $24.
Girls and boys can learn the basic fundamentals of basketball, including shooting, dribbling, ball-handling, passing, defense and more. Terry Drone will instruct two separate sessions for girls based on grade level. These classes run on Thursdays from Oct. 1 to Oct 22 in the Old High School Gym. Girls in grades 3-4 will participate from 4 to 5:30 p.m. and girls in grades 5-6 will participate from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Rick Rubenacker will instruct boys in grades 4-6 from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturdays from Oct. 3 to Oct. 17 in the Old High School Gym. The cost of each course is $24.
Clydus and Eva Lynn Gray make learning how to dance fun. Students will learn the jitterbug and other dance steps in this class. It's geared for beginners, those who want a refresher, and those who just want to dance. "Shall We Dance" will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday evenings from Oct. 6 to Nov. 3 in the Old High School Gym; cost is $20 per person (no class on October 13).
Kids can join Paula Hatfield as she instructs "Kids in the Kitchen: Halloween." They will learn how to make fall and Halloween treats and discover the history of Halloween as they decorate a pumpkin. This course will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 20, in the Hamilton County Senior High School Home Economics Room. Registration is $10 and a supply fee of $5 is payable to the instructor the first night of class. Students must be six years of age or older or be accompanied by an adult.
