DU QUOIN, Ill. – It’s a small world after all.
The winners of two recent Rend Lake College giveaways travelled from two very different places to get to the Du Quoin State Fair this year. One lives almost 400 miles away in Kansas. The other is from RLC’s backyard in Ewing. They both ended up registering at RLC fair booths for their chance to win an iPod Touch or a tuition-free semester to RLC.
RLC President Charley D. Holstein drew for each prize Saturday night at the fair. Out of thousands upon thousands of entries slipped into RLC registration boxes, Holstein selected two winners with the same last name! Megan Hutchens of Overland Park, Kan., won the iPod while Robert Hutchens of Ewing took home the tuition.
“You might think we went through all of them and found these two to make our drawing more exciting or something,” Holstein joked. “That would have probably taken days to do, which makes me wonder what the odds are of this happening – that out of thousands who registered, the winners share the same last name although they live 400 miles away from one another. It’s bizarre. I had to look at the slips a few times to believe what had just happened!”
It gets better. They are related, but have never met one another – at least they don’t think so. Megan Hutchens, a student in Indiana, said her grandparents, Kenneth and Betty Hutchens, live in Benton.
Robert Hutchens said he doesn’t know Megan, but that his father is a second or third cousin to Kenneth Hutchens of Benton.
Robert Hutchens is an employee of Continental Tire North America in Mt. Vernon and was ecstatic to hear he had won the tuition prize. He has two boys who can arm wrestle for it in about five years, he joked.
“We really appreciate it. We have two boys. One is in seventh grade and one is in sixth. We hope whoever goes first will use it.”
Other winners of RLC prizes at the Du Quoin State Fair include Cecilia Turpin of Benton who won a free membership to the RLC Aquatic Center and Amber Boyd of Harrisburg who won a free massage from the RLC Massage Therapy program. RLC officials congratulate all the winners and thank everyone who entered at the fair this year.
