INA, Ill. – Sesser-Valier High School’s Brody Bauman took home top prize today in Rend Lake College’s 29th Annual Welding Contest. According to Dave Smith, professor of welding technology at the college, this year’s contest was a close race to decide the top four finishers.
The top three were awarded free tuition to Rend Lake’s welding program in the fall. All top 10 placers received a tee-shirt, welding gloves and a certificate.
Runner-up went to Bryce Jones of Waltonville High School, followed by Christopher High School’s Kyle Humerickhouse in third and Ryan Dawson of Christopher in fourth. Bauman, Jones and Humerickhouse all said they will be taking advantage of the scholarships.
Bauman said he is very glad he attended the contest and sees it as a good opportunity toward his goal of working in the welding field. He thanked RLC Welding Instructor Pete Wilce for his role in organizing and coordinating the contest, and Sonny Hart from ILMO Products for donating prizes, one of which was a new welding helmet awarded to Bauman as the top finisher.
Rounding out the top 10 were Michael Phelps (Sesser-Valier) in fifth, Connor Withrow (Wayne City) in sixth, Steven Dial (Christopher) in seventh, David Ragan (Christopher) in eighth, Seth Loyd (Wayne City) in ninth and Scott Harmon (Thompsonville) in 10th.
