RLC TAKES TOP SPOTS IN FOUR CATEGORIES AT STATE SKILLSUSA COMPETITION
Warriors took top honors in four categories at the recent Illinois SkillsUSA Leadership and Skills Conference, earning a chance to compete at the national level this summer.
The 47th annual state contest was held April 14-16 in Springfield. RLC students competed in the categories of Advertising Design, Architectural Drafting, Commercial Baking, Cosmetology, Culinary Arts and TeamWorks. RLC students swept the top six spots in Architecural Drafting, the top three spots in Advertising Design and the top two spots in Culinary Arts. RLC also claimed first place in the TeamWorks Construction Skills category - the first time it had fielded a team in that contest.
RLC SkillsUSA Coach Kevin Weston said, "The SkillsUSA group performed very well at the state competition and I feel the students were provided a challenging and rewarding experience," said Kevin Weston, RLC SkillsUSA Coach. "The students' competitions ranged from four to 12 hours each. This was the college's first attempt at fielding a TeamWorks team, which was given the task of framing a small structure, laying block and brick, plumbing and wiring in two days [12 hours]."
Winning has additional perks. The TeamWorks and Advertising Design contest winners are provided industry travel reimbursement to go on to the SkillsUSA Nationals along with the Architectural Drafting and Culinary Arts winners.
"This was also the first year for cosmetology students to be involved in the competition, and a third-place finish reflects well on our program," Weston added. "I think many of the students got to know each other better and had an experience that they will remember for life."
