ADULT VOLUNTEER LITERACY

The Adult Volunteer Literacy Program recruits and trains tutors to help adults gain skills they need to function in today’s society. The Adult Volunteer Literacy Program serves adults 16 years of age and older, who’s reading or math skills are assessed below a ninth grade level.

Learners are:

  • Assessed using the Slosson Oral Reading Test or the Test of Adult Basic Education
  • Matched with a compatible volunteer tutor for small group or individual tutoring sessions
  • Provided with instruction that meets their needs

Volunteers are:

  • Trained to work with adult learners
  • Matched with a compatible learner
  • Allowed to set their tutoring schedule
  • Given materials appropriate for assigned learner
  • Provided ongoing support from the Adult Volunteer Literacy staff

The Adult Volunteer Literacy Program partners with public libraries throughout the Rend Lake College district in Franklin, Jefferson, Hamilton and Perry counties to provide convenient meeting sites for tutors and learners.

All services are free, confidential, individualized and student centered.
